You can read my review of the Supernatural episode "Death Takes a Holiday," which is now up at pinkraygun.com. Thank you!
An excerpt:
"Favorite scene, hands down, was the opening scene. Dean and Sam are in a diner. It could be any diner anywhere in the country, but it is, in essence, their diner, for it is the same diner they always go to: a slightly worn, of questionable health code, non-chain diner. The kind of real place you hope to find on your travels along the blue lines, an out-of-the-way discovery that will have the best biscuits and gravy your mouth has ever had the pleasure to experience, the fluffiest flapjacks with plenty of butter and fake maple syrup (or Kayro, if you prefer), and coffee perky enough to rattle the bones in your toes and keep you flying down the highway for miles and miles. (I love diners and eating breakfast at them, can you tell?)"

Date: 2009-03-17 12:53 pm (UTC)Cole's mom looks over a scrapbook of her son, grieving. Tessa shows up for Cole. Tell your brother thanks for nothing Cole grouses to Dean. Tessa tells Cole that as long as his mother can feel his presence, she'll be in pain. Staying here is worse, adds Dean, eventually your whole family will be gone and you'll be alone. . .we're all scared. Cole walks into Tessa's embrace and disappears. "Look out for that boy," urges Dean. Before leaving, Tessa advises Dean: Stop lying to yourself. That second chance--there are no miracles.
Hotel room. Dean returns. Pam is bleeding profusely. I'm sorry, says Sam. Pam wishes Bobby to hell for introducing her to the Winchesters. Before dying, she hisses in Sam's ear, I FELT what you did, and if you think it's a good thing, you're WRONG.
I so loved Pam! She was a strong wonderful woman with a mind of her own, sexually cool and funny. Damn you, Kripke?
How could Dean think of himself as Joe the Plumber (that douche, LOL)? He's cheated death so often. He brought his brother back from death at a crossroads! He was in hell, brought back by an angel! Anyone think Dean is re-writing history just a bit in his own mind?
So the angels can't do everything, which is why they need help from humans.
Just like the demons needed help from someone like Jake (or Sam) to open the Devil's Gate!
Pretty cool, huh? And I liked how they remembered that Dean forgot Tessa and that whole thing from IMTOD. He thought Tessa one of his ONS gals! She grew her hair long, didn't she?
After Pam's unexpected and terrible death, which had me crying, came the short, sweet dedication of all of season 4 of SUPERNATURAL to Kim Manners, which really sent my waterworks into overdrive. I was going over my photos of my trip to Vancouver in 2007, and I have some pictures of Kim that I will treasure forever. He will be missed by the cast and crew of course, desperately, but also by the fans, who revere his work not just on SUPERNATURAL but on other shows, too. Kim, your touch on SUPERNATURAL was something very special. Your touch on ALL of us will forever be missed.
Loved this episode so much. It tied together present and past, had everybody using the brothers for their own purposes, Tessa, warning Dean, Pam warning Sam--I just wish Sam and Dean would turn to EACH OTHER for advice instead of listening to everyone else!
Because, frankly, I don't really trust Castiel (and definitely not Uriel); Ruby's intentions are still up in the air; Pam was dying and pissed off; Tessa is neutral but might have her own secret agenda; the Trickster, who weighed in back during MS, likes to play games, sit back and see what happens. . .you see what I'm getting at?
Only love merits trust. I think Sam is keeping things from Dean for a good reason, and the main one is to keep him safe.
Excellent review, Syl!
Love, Robin

Date: 2009-03-17 04:45 pm (UTC)Dean's wearing three layers too many
I thought exactly the same. It became particularly obvious when he was next to Sam, who was for a change allowed to wear only two layers. I'm wondering if their clothes these days are reflecting their mental states. Sam feels special and invincible, he has no need for an armor. In contrast to Sam, Dean is scared and probably does feel weak, he's still hurting from Sam's siren-speach, so he bundles himself in layers over layers to appear harder and have a buffer between him and the world. Or maybe wardrobe just decided to be mean. Who knows.
Dean should not be allowed to lie all splayed out on the edge of a bed. Holy cow! I nearly fell off my chair at that sight.
Sam lies and tells Dean that he has no idea why Alistair left
Argh, Sammy and the lying. It's so frustrating. Please Sam, stop it. Hang out with Ruby and do with her whatever you two do, but please stop the lying.
Loved the return of Tessa. I really liked her in In My Time of Dying and McKeon and Ackles work very well together. Such beautiful people. I could watch them kissing all day, with Padalecki staring and looking jealous. *g*
RIP Pamela. You'll be missed.
Wonderful review!
